Before it hits the stores next Tuesday, March 28, you can listen to Rob Zombie's new album Educated Horses at mp3.com.
This is better than his previous album, Sinister Urge, where he was on the verge of becoming a caricature of himself. Zombie sounds as original and inspired as ever. Although he still delves into Spookshow rock, showing his own affinity for horror movies, he has matured away from the trappings of them. The trademark horror movie soundclips (ranging from Night of the Living Dead to Horror Hotel) that have filled Zombie's previous albums are absent here.
Educated Horses is raw and fiercesome, with surging anthems like "American Witch", "Foxy Foxy", "The Scorpion Sleeps", and "Let it all Bleed Out".
"Seventeen Year Locust" has a sexy groove and an exotic sitar, maintaining the album's sense of distinction and development. "Death of it All" is beautifully haunting and melodic, with a sinister edge and a compelling narrative about Bonnie and Clyde.
"The Devil's Rejects", with it's refrain of "Hell doesn't want them/Hell doesn't need them" is a menacing dirge of an homage to the demented Firefly family in his film The Devil's Rejects.
"Lords of Salem" is the most reminiscent of Zombie's musical flair for horror themes on previous albums like Hellbilly Deluxe. With heavy riffs and Rob Zombie's roaring shouts of more familiar lyrics like "God hates the Lords of Salem/ No one can destroy them", it conjures up enough drama to inspire cinematic mosaics in one's mind, and ends the album very satisfactorily.Especially since it's theme is reminiscent of the first song on the album "American Witch".
There's more. There are a couple of instrumental pieces, the first one opening the album, that accompany the songs perfectly and help maintain a consistent, mature, and thought-provoking tone.
